Why fiberglass ducts are considered good?

Sheet metal is usually uninsulated and prone to crack easier. So, if you choose them due to their cheap price, make sure to insulate them externally.

Why does the HVAC thermostat never stop?

The thermostat is programmed to stop the operation of the unit when it has reached the desired temperatures. When the air ducts are damaged and there's air leakage, there will be no sufficient air and the HVAC unit won't work properly. You will need air duct repair and make sure to seal all cracks.
